The
group that you are volunteering to help?
The
Lambeth Summer Projects Trust (LSPT) is a voluntary
organisation and a registered charity No. 1068812,
now in our 23rd year. We work in partnership with
Lambeth Police, the community, the Children &
Young People's Service (CYPS), Volunteer Centres,
Schools and other agencies and endeavour to tackle
the issues of crime, deprivation and poverty in line
with the ‘Every Child Matters' strategy, the Lambeth
Young & Safe Strategy 2008/2013 and the Metropolitan
Police Youth Service Strategy 2008/2010 by providing
crime diversionary initiatives and activities for
9 to 16 year old inner city young people.
What
activities will my role include?
The
Projects provide a recreational and educational activity
programme which aim to challenge, stimulate and interest.
In keeping with the Project's themes of Crime Diversion
/ Prevention and Good Citizenship, the workshop programme
includes the issues of Gang issues, Anti-Street Robbery,
Burglary, Bullying, Graffiti, Litter, Truancy, Racism,
Drugs & Alcohol Awareness and incorporate issues
of the environment and people's quality of life. The
young people express their thoughts or ideas of the
above themes through computers, drama, music, arts
& crafts, dance, video and photography.
The
activities programme includes rock climbing, canoeing,
sailing, fencing, ice skating, ten pin bowling, and
day trips. A constant programme of on site and off
site sports activities will involve basketball, football
training, table tennis, tennis, cricket, badminton
and much more.
What
if there are some activities I am unable to participate
in?
There
is no problem if, for some reason, a volunteer cannot
participate in all activities but it will help if
we know beforehand.
Are
there any restrictions for volunteers?
Volunteers
are an important and integral part of the Projects
and we welcome those 18 years and over. Because the
role involves working with children a volunteer must
either produce their own Criminal Record Bureau (CRB)
check or be prepared to have one carried out by the
Trust
What
are the dates and times of the Projects and where
will I work?
The
Project dates very slightly each year but they run
from Monday to Friday from 9am to 4 pm for 4 weeks
at 4 centres, Brixton, Clapham & Kennington, Norwood
and Streatham. Volunteers will benefit most if they
are available to help for at least 5 or the 20 days.
Do
I need any skills?
Qualifications
or skills are an advantage but not necessary. Our
training sessions are of great value to volunteers
and demonstrate the importance we place on interaction
with inner city young people, getting along with fellow
staff members and a willingness to operate as part
of a team. Our programme of activities is so diverse
that we always welcome any new ideas, skills or initiatives
that a volunteer is able to bring to the Projects.
Who
will I work alongside?
New
volunteers work alongside others with past Project
experience, which includes committee members, Police
officers and various other Police staff, Lambeth Volunteer
Cadets, students, and Lambeth Youth & Play Service
placements.
Will
help be at hand if I have a problem?
Volunteers
play a vital role in the Projects and we want them
to feel comfortable. The Projects have in place a
procedure should a volunteer wish to raise an issue
or have a problem.
Are
there policies and insurance in place?
The
LSPT has in place a Child Protection Policy, Health
& Safety Guidelines and an Equal Opportunity Policy.
All those who work on the projects are covered by
public liability insurance provided through the Metropolitan
Police.
Do
I get any expenses reimbursed?
Fares
are reimbursed on production of a ticket or other
proof of payment and a complimentary lunch is provided
each day by the projects.
